What Is a Toll-Free Number?

A toll-free number (TFN) is a 10-digit number that starts with 8XX (such as 833, 844, or 855) and can be used to send SMS and MMS messages.
Example: “Text DEALS to 1-833-555-1234”
When you install SMSWise, a toll-free number is automatically assigned to your store. You can view and manage your number directly from your SMSWise dashboard

How the TFN Verification Process Works

Once a toll-free number is assigned, SMSWise submits it for carrier verification. The process typically takes 3–10 business days and includes the following steps:

1. Website review

Your website is manually reviewed to confirm your business is legitimate, live, and actively selling products or services.

2. Business identity verification

U.S. businesses: Employer Identification Number (EIN) is required
Non-U.S. businesses: A valid business registration ID (e.g., Company Number)

3. Address verification (sole proprietors)

For sole proprietors, the business address (pulled from Shopify) is verified as part of the process.

4. Content and category review (SHAFT check)

Carriers apply stricter rules to certain industries known as SHAFT:

Sex
Hate
Alcohol
Firearms
Tobacco (including CBD)

If your business falls into one of these categories, additional compliance steps—such as age verification—may be required. Messages may be blocked if proper safeguards are not in place.

Important: Your website must be live and publicly accessible during verification.

Common Reasons TFN Verification Is Denied

Most denials can be resolved, but the most common causes include

Restricted or impermissible content

(SHAFT-related without proper safeguards)

Incomplete or unpublished product catalog

Website not live or password-protected

Business information missing or inconsistent

Important: Password-protected or “coming soon” websites cannot be verified. Your site must remain live until verification is completed.

What Happens If Verification Is Denied?

If your TFN is denied:

SMSWise will notify you of the reason
Our team will guide you on required fixes
We’ll resubmit your application once issues are resolved

If you believe your TFN was denied in error, our support team will escalate the case with carrier partners to correct the status as quickly as possible

Can I Send Messages Without Verification?

No.
Unverified toll-free numbers cannot send SMS or MMS in the U.S. and Canada. This includes:

Campaign messages
Automated flows
Double opt-in confirmation messages

You will not be charged for failed sends due to an unverified number.
